See VoucherPageHow to set a Christmas budget
- Start with one number. Decide the total you can spend without borrowing — ideally money you already have or will save before December.
- List everyone you buy for and give each person a gift budget. The calculator shows instantly if your plan fits.
- Don’t forget the hidden costs: food and drinks, decorations, the tree, wrapping and cards, travel, parties and outfits often add 30–50% on top of gifts.
- Track as you shop. Enter what you actually spent; the “left to spend” figure keeps you honest.
A common rule of thumb is to keep Christmas spending at or below 1.5% of your yearly net income, or around one week of take-home pay. Saving a small amount each month from January makes next December much easier.
FAQ
How much should I spend on Christmas?
Spend only what you can pay for without debt. Many budgeting guides suggest around 1.5% of yearly net income or about one week of take-home pay, split between gifts and other holiday costs.
How much should I spend per person on gifts?
Divide your gift budget by the number of people, then adjust: closest family usually gets more, colleagues and extended family less. Secret Santa or a family price limit helps keep it fair.
What costs do people forget in a Christmas budget?
Food and drinks, decorations, the tree, wrapping paper and cards, postage, travel, party outfits, and gifts for teachers, hosts or colleagues.
Is my data saved?
Yes, but only in your own browser (local storage). Nothing is uploaded. You can export a CSV to open in Excel or Google Sheets.
Is there a more detailed Christmas planner?
Yes — the Christmas Budget & Gift Tracker spreadsheet (€7) adds gift ideas, where-to-buy links, wrap and delivery checklists and a full dashboard.
